See Me Series: The African American CPA Experience in Colorado
with COCPA Members Eula Adams, CPA, Lucius Ashby, CPA, Joni Johnson-Powe, CPA, and Isaac Adamu, CPA

While the State of New York was the first U.S. state to administer the Certified Public Accountant Exam, in 1896, it wasn’t until 1921 that John Cromwell, Jr., became the first African American CPA in the country. Since then, the number of African American CPAs has grown slowly; it took about 45 years for that number to hit 100 in the United States. As of 2021, African American CPAs accounted for less than 9% of the 500,000 CPAs in the United States.

Join us February 22, as part of African American/Black History Month, for a panel discussion on the African American CPA Experience in Colorado. Panelists represent varying degrees of experience and a wide range of career paths within the profession, and include Lucius Ashby, one of the first Black individuals to become licensed as a Colorado CPA. Ashby, who has nearly 50 years’ experience building a CPA practice, will join panelists Joni Johnson-Powe, a tax partner with KPMG, Isaac Adamu, a manager with Grant Thornton, and Eula Adams, who will share his experiences in a large public accounting firm, a Fortune 500 company, and as a nonprofit board member.
